What are learning styles? Learning style is an individual's unique approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses, and preferences.

Learning style overview Everyone has his/her own way of learning Everyone has a mix of learning styles Some have a dominant learning style The is no right or wrong learning style

Traditional styles Traditional schooling mainly uses linguistic and logical teaching methods Many schools still rely on classroom and book-based teaching, much repetition, and pressured exams  Students who use these learning styles excel in the traditional classroom Students who use less favored learning styles score lower in the traditional classroom

Brain Research

Multiple Intelligences Howard Gardner of Harvard has identified seven distinct intelligences. theory has emerged from recent cognitive research and "documents the extent to which students possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways," according to Gardner (1991). Gardner says that these differences "challenge an educational system that assumes that everyone can learn the same materials in the same way and that a uniform, universal measure suffices to test student learning

The Seven Learning Styles Visual Aural Verbal Physical Logical Social Solitary

Visual (spatial) Prefers using images, pictures colors and maps to organize information and communicate with others. Can easily visualize ideas and concepts Prefers to use mind maps, colors, and images in place of text.

Aural (auditory-musical) Prefers using sound and music Often associates concepts and ideas with sounds and music Uses sound as an anchoring technique to recall information

Verbal (linguistic) Prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Find it easy to express themselves, both in writing and verbally. Know the meaning of many words, and regularly make an effort to find the meaning of new words

Physical (kinesthetic) Prefers using your body, hands and sense of touch Think out issues, ideas and problems while moving or working with hands or whole body. Use larger hand gestures and other body language to communicate.

Logical (mathematical) Prefers using logic, reasoning and systems. Recognize patterns easily, as well as connections between seemingly meaningless content. Work well with numbers and you can perform complex calculations.

Social (interpersonal) Prefers to learn in groups or with other people. Prefers to work through issues, ideas and problems with a group. prefer social activities, rather than doing your own thing

Solitary (intrapersonal) Prefer to work alone and use self-study. Can concentrate well, focusing your thoughts and feelings on your current topic. Spend time on self-analysis, and often reflect on past events and the way you approached them.

Learning Styles Impact The use of multiple learning styles is a relatively new teaching approach Educators should recognize learning styles Howard Gardner argues that our educational system and society as a whole “would be better served if disciplines could be presented in a numbers of ways and learning could be assessed through a variety of means."
