Outcomes & Objectives Objectives To gain an introductory overview of 400 years’ history of African- Americans in the USA. To sequence key events on the journey from Slavery to the 2003 Oscars (when Black actors won Best Actor, Best Actress and the Lifetime Achievement Award). Outcomes 1. DO NOT GIVE THE STUDENTS ANY INDICATION AS TO THE NATURE OR TITLE OF THE TOPIC AT THIS POINT. 2. Students to complete the top half of the ‘Complete the Picture’ task from a point of complete ignorance (not knowing what the topic is vital for the subsequent ‘shock’ value!!) for 3-4mins. 3. When the full picture is revealed, students write 3 sentences to Describe what is happening in the scene, then Explain why they think it is happening. 4. Work through the Introductory slides to give the very brief ‘story’ of the topic. 5. Students to open the Excel and Word ‘Timeline Overview’ and complete the sequencing task. Black Peoples of the USA (1): How have the experiences of Black Peoples in the USA changed from 1619 to 2003? History Key Stage 3 Black Peoples of the USA Task What key events have affected the journey of African-Americans in the USA between 1619 and 2003? Image Source ~ffcp/exhibit/p11/p11 _8Large.jpg

TASK: Can you complete the picture?

CLUE: it was taken in the USA about 70 years ago.

TASK: Write three sentences, using plenty of adjectives, to describe this scene.

This was a ‘lynching’. These were common occurrences in Southern USA during the Twentieth Century.

Black people were also subjected to things such as : Beatings. Tarring and Feathering. Kidnappings. Floggings. Orders to leave town. Murders. Mutilations. …and one person was branded with acid, with the ‘N’.

So what are today’s aims: To gain an ‘OVERVIEW’ (or a ‘BIG PICTURE UNDERSTANDING’) of Black American’s history. To complete a ‘timeline teaser’ some of the main events.

In this topic you are going to learn about: The African civilisations. What it means to be a slave. What life was like as a slave. The reasons for slavery. How slaves won their freedom. The Civil rights movement.

When Black people first came to the USA, they were captured and treated like this… Who have the slaves been captured by? Why do you think this is?

…and forced to work like this…

…but, in 2002 three Black actors won ALL three of the most important awards at USA’s most famous event – the Oscars.

TASK: Arrange the key events on the Excel file into chronological sequence.
