The Mosaic Covenant Part III

Outline of the Mosaic Covenant Historical Prologue Exod 19:1-4 Preamble Exod 19:5-6 Stipulations Exod 20:3-23:19 Provision for Reading Exod 24:4-7 Blessings & Curses Exod 23:20-23

Blessings and Curses Associated with the Covenant: Leviticus 26 Vv. 1-2: Fundamentals of the Law Vv. 3-13: Blessings for Obedience Prosperity Peace Power Population Provision Presence Vv. 14-39: Curses for Disobedience Debilitation and Defeat Drought Devastation by Wild Beasts Devastation by Siege Deportation Vv. 40-46: Promise of Restoration Blessings are those affiliated with the Abrahamic Covenant. They are very material and very much tied to the land. Curses are a removal of the land, seed, and blessing promises of the Abrahamic Covenant

Relationship of the Mosaic Covenants to the Other Covenants The Mosaic Covenant was the constitution for the nation of Israel, governing the relationship between God and His elect nation. It was the means by which the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant would be fulfilled. The special priesthood of the sons of Aaron, first established in the Mosaic Covenant (Exod 28:1), is later affirmed to the descendants of Phineas in the Priestly Covenant (Num 25:10-13).

Relationship of the Mosaic Covenants to the Other Covenants The Deuteronomic Covenant is in essence a renewal of the Mosaic Covenant with the new generation of Israelites. The king provided for in the Davidic Covenant was responsible to conduct his rule in accordance with the principles of the Mosaic Covenant (Deut 17:18-20). And even the New Covenant states that the Law of God will be put within the descendants of Abraham and written upon their hearts (Jer 31:31-33). Whole book of Deuteronomy is a covenant document, a renewal of the Mosaic Covenant with the new generation of Israelites.

Are We as Christians under the Mosaic Law? Some would argue that we are under the Ten Commandments, but not under the civil and ceremonial aspects of the Law. The NT is very clear that the believer is not under the Mosaic Law (Acts 15; Rom 6:14; Gal 5:18; 1 Cor 9:20-21).

NT Believers Not Under the Law THE Issue in Acts 15 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace (Rom 6:14). But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law (Gal 5:18). And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law, though not being myself under the Law, that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law (1 Cor 9:20-21).

What was the purpose of the Mosaic Law? to reveal man’s sinfulness (Rom 3:19-20) to reveal the hideous nature of sin (Rom 7:7-13) to act as a tutor until Christ (Gal 3:23-25) to reveal the holiness of God to restrain wrong doing in order to protect the moral, social, and religious institutions of Israel
