MODERN HISTORY DANCE

MODERN DANCE Modern dance emerged as a contrast and a challenge to the rigorously structured world of ballet, it was not readily accepted as an art form. Modern dance was interested in the communication of emotional experiences- through basic movement, through uninhibited movement- not through the academic tradition of ballet masters. It is however, a popular art form of today.

LOIE FULLER 1900’s, one of the three Precursors of Modern Dance along with Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. Famous for dancing with scarves and sticks while changing forms into flowers and butterflies. Invented her own multi-lighting design which contributed to color gels of today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIrnFrDXjlk

EARLY 1900’s Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis were a married dance couple who created the Denishawn Company. Martha Graham was a famous choreographer and performer who created the theory of contract and release. Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman created the Humphrey- Weidman Company. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgf3xgbKYko
