Microsoft Office Word 2013

 Establishes standards of written communication concerning:  Formatting and page layout  Stylistic techniques  Citing sources

 Makes it easy for readers to navigate  Provides structure so readers are not lost due to poor formatting  Establish your credibility or ethos in the field by demonstrating an awareness of your audience and their needs as fellow researchers (particularly concerning the citing of references)

 Typed and printed on standard paper (always printed)  Must be double-spaced – 12 pt. font – Times New Roman (legible font)  Margins – 1 inch (both sides)  Indent the 1 st line of the paragraphs – one half-inch from the margin (use the tab key)  Must include header that numbers all pages and has your last name – align right  Use italics in your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary (to provide emphasis)!  Have end notes? – must be on a separate sheet of paper before your works cited page – title the section NOTES

 When quoting the work of others in your paper, you will format quotations differently depending on the length of the quote – Still double spaced  Short Quotes:  You will enclose the quote in double quotation marks  You will provide the author and the page number  Punctuation goes AFTER the parenthetical quotation  Question marks and exclamation points should appear within the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted passage, but after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of your text  Fewer than 4-typed lines

According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184), though others disagree. According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184). Is it possible that dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184)? - From Purdue Owl

 Long quotes are put in their own block of text and OMIT quotation marks  Indent 1-inch  Your parenthetical citation should come AFTER the closing punctuation mark

Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration: They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even in their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. Inquiries were made as to how it got there; I was obliged to confess, and in recompense for my cowardice and inhumanity was sent out of the house. (Bronte 78)

 You should add brackets around word/words if added to a quotation  If omitting a word/words from a quote, you must use ellipsis marks (…) Jan Harold Brunvand, in an essay on urban legends, states, "some individuals [who retell urban legends] make a point of learning every rumor or tale" (78). In an essay on urban legends, Jan Harold Brunvand notes that "some individuals make a point of learning every recent rumor or tale... and in a short time a lively exchange of details occurs" (78).

 DO NOT use periods or spaces in abbreviations composed solely of capital letters, except with proper names:  EX: US, MA, FL, HTML, UPS (Don’t use)  EX: K. M. Abdell (Use)  Use a period if the abbreviation ends in a lower case letter, unless an internet suffix  EX: assn., conf., eng.  EX:.com,.edu

 Note: Degree names are a notable exception to the lowercase abbreviation rule.  Degree names: PhD, EdD, PsyD  Use periods between letters without spacing if each letter represents a word in common lower case abbreviations:  a.m., e.g., i.e.
