In class essay: We have read multiple nonfiction pieces this year. Your essay needs to focus on a similarity that three of the pieces share. The similarities can be the styles of the pieces, subject matters, authors’ purposes, or any other topic you can think of. The paper is to be five paragraphs. The paper should be 1-2 pages double-spaced (More writing is welcome, but make sure it is written well or writing more can hurt you). It should use Times New Roman font that is 12 points, be double-spaced, and include a heading, title, and page numbers. Direct Citations Direct citations use quotation marks and the exact words from a text: Harriet Tubman was not a typical slave girl, she rebelled openly: “Harriet never liked to work as a servant in the house, so because of her rebellious nature, she was soon ordered to the fields,” (Hughes 262).

Indirect Citations Indirect citations refer to larger portions of text or an entire work. No quotation marks are needed: Brown works very hard to write a letter “A” with his left foot. His story, “from My Left Foot” illustrates what humans are capable of, even when they have disabilities.
