Observational and Latent Learning

The Willpower Instinct Read pg. 16 – 23 independently Reading Strategy: Generate two questions that you have about the text. Vocabulary Strategy: write down words that you do not know. Next to the word, write down the definition using context clues only. After reading… Answer your questions. Then, share your answer with the person next to you.

Bellringer: Alfred B. As a young child, Alfred was often alone. His parents had separated when he was at a young age, and this caused him to turn to books for comfort and support. He became a self-taught intellectual, reading books by Charles Darwin and Benjamin Franklin. Introverted and a loner, self-educating suited him. Theories and science became the true loves of his life. Typically unaware of the emotions of others, he found it difficult to make friends because of the constant judgment and critiques he was often pressing on them. Alfred does not take failure well, and would temporarily shut down if presented with it.

Today We will continue to explore the ways in which we learn. We will focus not on the direct learning that happens in the classrooms, but the subconscious ways we learn that impact how we behave and interact with others through observational learning and latent learning.

Observational Learning Learning that occurs through the observation of others. People can learn by watching and imitating behavior.

Observational Learning: Bandura Think…. How did the children’s behavior change after their first interaction with the doll to how they viewed adults interact with the doll? BqwWlJg8U

Modeling: Bandura (1961) Research question: If children are exposed to aggressive behavior from an adult, will they imitate it? Results: Those shown the aggressive adult were more more aggressive to the doll (physically and verbally) Observational learning / Modeling

Observational Learning (in journals) Create an example of observational behavior that will help you remember this definition; you can draw an image, write a definition, etc.) Reflect on your own life experiences. When have you observed a behavior and then found yourself modeling that behavior in your own interactions? Turn and talk.

Latent Learning Refers to the process in which learning takes place, but there is no demonstration of knowledge until a reward or incentive is present. EX: A college freshman is taught study skills, but does not study until failing several exams. Upon using the skills taught to him, he is successful on exams. A dolphin is trained to dance with its trainer by watching others, but does not do so until given fish as a reward.

Guided Practice: Find your match Directions: You either have a definition or an example. Get up and find the example that best matches the definition of observational learning or latent learning.
