Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Phases of a turn: Untap Upkeep Draw 1 st Main Phase (precombat Main) Combat Phase 2 nd Main Phase End Step Cleanup

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Untap Step: Active player untaps all elgible permanents simultaneously There is no priority pass during the untap step

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Upkeep Step: Used to handle any “upkeep” triggers that may exist Active player receives priority then the opponent It is helpful to place a die reminder on top of your library for upkeep triggers and to survey the board

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Draw Step The active player draws and retains priority What happens if you draw an extra card?

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority 1 st Main Phase: The active player may play a land (this doesn't use the stack) This is the phase where it is common for creatures, enchantment, planeswalker, and sorcery spells are played When the stack is empty and both players pass priority you may move to the Combat Step

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Combat Step This step is divided into many parts with a lot of priority passes Beginning of Combat Declare attackers – all simultaneously. This is where creatures are tapped AND where abilities of attacking creatures are triggered Declare blockers – all simultaneously. You can block with multiple creatures. Combat damage step – Attacker assigns damage, damage happens simultaneously End of combat step

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority 2 nd Main Phase: The active player may play a land if they haven't already (this doesn't use the stack) This is the phase where it is common for creatures, enchantment, planeswalker, and sorcery spells are played Damage is still on creatures from the combat Step

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority End Step All abilities that trigger at “the beginning of the end step” go on the stack There is a priority pass – this is the last time this turn the inactive player can act before damage comes off creatures

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Cleanup Active player discards down to maximum hand size All damage is removed from permanents and “until end of turn” effects end Unless there is a special ability that triggers in this step there is no priority pass

Wednesday Night Magic Taking a turn/Priority Priority When a player has priority it is his/her turn to act. That player may play a spell, use an ability, or pass priority to another player When a player plays a spell they retain priority AND when a spell resolves (like a planeswalker) he/she retains priority Announcing priority passes and phases of the turn adds clarity to the game state for both players No player can take priority from or away from a player who has it legally. This means players can't rush through and deny you a legal chance to act.
