Battle of Britain  During the summer and autumn of 1940 the German and Italian air force fought the Canadian and British air force in an air battle known as the Battle of Britain. Hitler wanted to win the war in the sky so he could gain easier access to Britain. It was the first major campaign to be fought all by planes. It was the most sustained and largest aerial bombing campaign to that date. Shipping convoys and shipping centers were main targets. A month later the German and Italian air force started bombing RAF(Royal Air Force) airfields and infrastructure.

Stalingrad  The battle of Stalingrad started on July 17 th and ended in the month of early February  It is now called Volgograd  Military casualties mounted to over 1 million  Romanian soldiers and Hungarian soldiers covered the flanks of the superior German forces.  Civilian casualties are unknown

D-day  At 6:30 am on Tuesday, 6 of June 1944 the British, American, and Canadian army, air force and navy. Just after midnight on June 6, 1942 Allied airborne divisions landed behind German lines and started destroying vital fortifications and gun implasments. D-day was named Operation Overlord by the Allied high command. It was the biggest amphibious invasion of all time. It took place along a 50 mile stretch of Normandy. The Allied side won but took heavy casual.

JUNO beach plans

The Scheldt The Scheldt is a major estuary in the Netherlands/Belgium border. The Canadians had to take it and they did with a mixed force ( mostly Canadian) of Australians, British and a bit of the Belgian resistance and took heavy casualties. It opened up the port but was rendered useless because of the estuary. Convoys that passed through would be picked of by German guns so they had to take the rest of the estuary. However Canada needed more soldiers because of an enlisting crisis. In the end the allies won and got major shipping supplies to the front.

Pearl Harbor On the 8 th of December 1941 an armada of Japanese air force and 11 midget submarines(12 where originally launched but one was sunk by a American ship patrolling the waters surrounding the harbor). The idea of it being a surprise attack is false the ship that sunk the midget sub called in that it sunk the submarine and the army command did nothing which ended up costing 2,403 sailors their lives and made many others wounded.

Midway  Between the 4th and 7 th of June, 1942 the US navy fought the Japanese navy in a sea and air battle. The Japanese navy wanted to knock out the US navy and then that would lead to the US force to surrender. Japan’s plan was to lure the US navy’s aircraft carriers into a trap and destroy them. This made the US retaliate and fight back against the Japanese forces. The plan was botched when the Japanese high command thought the US would react slowly and the US navy did not. In the end the US won.

Guadalcanal

 The battle waged between August 7 th 1942 and February 9 th 1943  value: stopping Japan from destroying shipping lanes between Australia, U.S and New Zealand.

Battle of the Bulge  During the 16 of December 1944 to the 25 of January 1945 the American army fought the German army in one of the most important battles of World War II. The Americans had around 500,000 to 840,000 men, 1,300 medium tanks, and 394 artillery guns and the Germans had 200,00 to 500,000 men, 1,800 tanks, and 1,900 artillery guns. The battle was the bloodiest and largest battle fought in World War II. The Allied forces won.

Collapse of the German Empire  From 1933 to 1945 the German chancellor Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler took over the government in Germany and started World War II by invading Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, and then France. Towards the end of World War II the Allies invaded Berlin where Hitler was hiding in his under ground bunker. Once he realized that he was going to be over thrown and his wife died of a drug overdose he shot himself in the head.
