Industry is not dead in America Industry has switched to more sophisticated types of manufacturing to be able to compete globally Although in a recession, engineers are in a high demand Industry has expectations on future engineer hires

CSUF’s Goals To meet the needs of Industry concerning our graduates To increase enrollment and reduce the dropout rate for Engineering Majors To influence High School students to prepare them for a degree in Engineering

The Needs of Industry Low sense of Manufacturability More time and money spent on making parts Over-design parts More time and money spent on making parts

Industry desires engineers that have an understanding of these faults. Before: An Engineer received his specialized training on the job. Today: The recession hit industry has focused on Engineers with little need of onsite training.

CSUF ME Courses ME 315 Fabrication Techniques and Manufacturing Practices ME 461 Fabrication Methods ME 483 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing ME 414, ME 419 Senior Design Projects

Manufacturing represents just a portion of the Mechanical Engineering study plan. Enrollment has jumped from 14 students a year to 75 students a semester in ME 315 alone.

As more students enroll in these courses, a wider range of student capabilities is being shown What used to be an engineer-oriented course has transformed into a basic high school shop class At the same time, the students drafting abilities have diminished substantially

Engineering Students In the first 2 years of schooling, 50% drop out of the college Aside from academic disqualification, student dropout is linked to lack of Interest in the subject matter.

Programs structured like Esperanza’s address many problems we have discussed today Esperanza’s CAD/Drafting course load greatly mimics college university’s course structure.

Those with High School training towards an Engineering degree tend to: Develop into a professional Engineer during their College education much faster Take full advantage of their time at that particular University thus increasing their knowledge of their interest Decreases their chances of dropping out dramatically
