Living things Where plants and animals align

What’s alive  We are surrounded by living and non- living things.  All animals and plants are living things and biology is the study of these living things.  A cat playing with a ball is obviously living.  You think of some living and non living characteristics…

Respiration  It is the release of energy by a chemical reaction  All living things exchange gases with their environment.  Animals take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants take in _________ and release __________.

Nutrition Taking in food: Nutrition gives living things the energy and materials they need to move and make new cells( to grow, reproduce and repair). What is our nutrition?

Excretion  Waste body chemicals are poisonous and the body must get rid of them.

Growth & Development  Living things get bigger and more complex with time.

Sensitivity  Living things react to changes around them. We react to touch, light, heat, cold and sound, as do other living things.  Just in case you thought plants don’t move think again! Watch to the movie below.  (They are sensitive to sunlight)

Reproduction  All living things produce young.  Humans make babies, cats produce kittens and pigeons lay eggs.  Plants also reproduce. Many make seeds which can germinate and grow into new plants.

Movement  All living organisms show movement of one kind or another.  All living organisms have internal movement, which means that they have the ability of moving substances from one part of their body to another.  Some living organisms show external movement as well - they can move from place to place by walking, flying or swimming

Now to the difference between plants and animals…  One of the main difference between plants and animals is FOOD.  Plants are different from animals because they can make their own food through the process of PHOTOSYNTHESIS.  Therefore the internal structure of plants are different to those of animals.  What other differences can you think of?

Further classification…  Classification does not stop there. We have seen plants and animals have some distinct differences, however we are considered animals so does that mean we have the exact same features of a cat?  NO, so plants and animals are further classified…

Homework Task  Research at least 4 differences between plants and animals.  Animals are further classified into reptiles, mammal and what other groups?  Give 3 reasons why we can not live without plants.
