EMERGING TECHNOLOGY: INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS By: Lindsey Soutar

What is an Interactive Whiteboard?  An interactive whiteboard, or IWB is:  A large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector  Display on the screen is a giant replica of the computer screen and is controlled by a pen, finger or other device  Essentially extends the ability of a blackboard or simple whiteboard

How does an IWB work?  Brands of IWB:  SMART Board, ActivBoard, eBeam, Mimio, Webster  Multiple kinds of IWB that work in different ways Computer ProjectorIWB

Pros & Cons of IWB ProsCons -Very similar to whiteboards -Make it easy for teachers to enhance presentations -Allows learners to actively participate in learning -If activities are saved, it makes it easier for teachers to share resources with teammates -Accommodates many learning styles -Makes lessons highly motivating and organized -Very expensive -Surface can be damaged just like whiteboard/blackboard -For students: A question of whether initial motivation wears off after students become familiar with technology -For Teachers: setup of the board, technical difficulties, location of the board

How Does an IWB Enhance Learning?  Offers a shared learning experience and learning with technology  Makes a one computer classroom into unlimited computer use for more than one student  Change the every day style of teaching  Accommodates learning styles:  Tactile learn can benefit from touching and moving things on the board, visual learners still see what is taking place

Uses for Interactive Whiteboards  There is an endless amount of activities that can be done on IWB, including:  Use built in maps to teach continents, oceans, states, etc  Digital storytelling  Teach whole group computer/internet skills  Teach editing skills  Use with favorite programs such as Kidspiration  Use charts and graphics that can benefit ESL or special education students  Create an electronic word wall  ….

Future of IWB  One article discussed that IWB are not used as much as they should be. How should we solve this problem?  Suggestion: “There is a clear need for the government and training providers to exemplify deeply interactive learning experiences and environments at classroom level. These should include examples and suggestions about the ways in which various technologies, including IWBs, might be used to enhance such experience.”

IWB Resources  How To: Use an Interactive Whiteboard  All Interactive Whiteboard Resources  IWB Resources plans.html plans.html  Provides lesson plans that use the IWB  The best, free IWB Resources  Allows you to select the subject and age group you are focused on and then provides you with different ideas of how to incorporate the IWB
