Walking Bears Lesson 2 – Key Stage 1 Walking Bears Lesson 2 – Key Stage 1

Starter Activity In pairs, think of describing words to describe your own journey to school Write these describing words on your mini whiteboards Share your words with the class Show children writing on whiteboards

Writing about your journey Think about your journey to school this morning In your literacy books, write about your journey to school, describing what you saw, what happened, how long it was etc. Make sure what that what you write is interesting for the reader Use some of their describing words and think about ‘What is unique about your own journey?’

Walking Bears picture Draw a picture representing part of your journey to or from school with Walking Bear. The picture should include a picture of themselves.

How Walking Bear works Every week on Walking Bear day pupils mark how they got to school on the Walking Bears wall chart We will use coloured pencils to show which way we travelled to school by colouring in the box next to our name. Every mode of travel has its own colour

How Walking Bear works At the beginning of every month the teacher will tell you which is the mode of travel that we will be counting that month. (It might not always be walking) At the end of the month the Class with the most walkers (or cyclists or scooters…) wins Walking Bear for their class for the next month Each child in the winning class will be able to take Walking Bear home for one night and write about their journey in the Walking Bears journal

Walking Bears rule activity Working in pairs, fill in the missing words on your sheets.

Plenary Work in pairs and discuss the following: – Which rule for taking part in Walking Bears, is the most important? Why? Present the rule they have chosen and the reason that they picked it to the class
