DNA STRUCTURE

Where is DNA located? Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic

Johann Freidrich Meisher 1869 Isolated the first crude extract of DNA from white blood cells. He called it nuclein.

Rosalind Franklin & Maurice Wilkens 1952 Used X-ray diffraction to understand the physical structure of the DNA molecule

James Watson & Francis Crick 1953 Formulated the correct double-helix structure of the DNA molecule.

Double Helix Is the shape of the DNA molecule that looks like “twisted ladder structure.” Made up of a backbone & complementary bases

Backbone Made up of sugar & phosphate molecules.

Complementary bases fit together based on shape. Thymine = Adenine Cytosine = Guanine

Nucleotide Made up of one phosphate, one sugar, one nitrogen base

What macromolecule is made when nucleotides are put together??

DNA DNA is a nucleic acid!

Which one is human?

All living things have the same DNA STRUCTURE! (all DNA is made up of phosphates, sugar, & bases) Genetic Code depends on order of the bases.

DNA > Chromosomes DNA is wound up very tightly in the form of a chromosome. Chromosomes are located in the nucleus of the cell.

PRACTICE….. If one strand of DNA has the base sequence CCGATT, the bases on the other strand of DNA are: _________________________________ If one strand of DNA has the base sequence TAAGGCGATGC, the bases on the other strand of DNA are: _________________________________
