For centuries, three religions lived and worked together in Spain. In 1492, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand married and unified the country. It was Catholic only. They started the Spanish Inquisition that hunted down and punished any Jews or Muslims in Spain. They were forced to convert, leave Spain, or be severely punished. The Inquisition was ruthless in carrying out this duty. Even if Muslims or Jews converted, they were punished if they were suspected of keeping their old beliefs. The Inquisition began to punish Christians as well. They punished all Muslims, Jews, and Protestants. The Catholic Church had no opposition in Spain and became very strong.

THE REFORMATION OF CHRISTIANITY CAUSES/EFFECTS Keeping peace between kingdoms with different religions was a difficult task in the Roman Empire. At the beginning of The 1500’s nearly all of Europe was Catholic. By 1600, nearly all of Southern Europe was still Catholic. The majority of people in Northern Europe had become Protestant.
