Mahboob School of Physiotherapy, Effective Tool in Polio Management Mahboob Power Evaluation and Therapeutic (MPET) Chart” By Mahboob ur Rahman Chairman Mahboob School of Physiotherapy, Peshawar

Poliomyelitis Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can affect nerves and may be fatal or lead to paralysis of one or more limbs. Attempts on regular basis by Federal and Provincial gov,t to eradicate the disease since last decades. Even then a considerable number of children are affected by polio throughout the country, where the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa is leading in polio cases.

The paralysed polio cases needs long term treatment and home based program MPET can be used as one of the treatment protocol for the paralysed polio patients management.

Objectives The aim of the study was to use and see the utility of the redesigned Mahboob Power Evaluation and Therapeutic chart in the treatment of polio affected children. To get a tool which may help in therapeutic regime for the polio patients along with diagnostic.

Previously the patients muscle power was assessed by Oxford Muscle Testing Chart which was a diagnostic tool only. The patients were not benefiting from this assessment process which was done throughout the year. Discussion

Thus, the need was felt to fill the gap in the Oxford chart and to make it useful in the Therapeutic Regime of polio affected children. Mahboob School of Physiotherapy took the initiative and its Chairman, Dr, Mahboob ur Rahman, designed Mahboob Power evaluation and therapeutic chart(MPET).

Cont our study patients were kept on muscle strengthening exercises for 4 months and then reviewed through MPET Chart By using this chart by the Therapist, the parents of the children or even the children by themselves can perform the exercise and improve the muscle power. It has been practiced since the last decade and has proved its worth

Methods: The study was under taken in a controlled environment in Habib Physiotherapy Complex, Peshawar. Physical Observation method was used to check the result of MPET.

In the treatment muscle assessment was done, reviewed after each 4 weeks. The improvement in Muscle power is noted and new plan given. It took 4 months to note a marked improvement.

cont Data was collected through recording results from the MPET chart. The participants were selected randomly on the basis of as and when came to HPC for treatment. The whole polio affected population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the target population for Study and 30 number of polio affected people was the sample size.

Statistics Response status Responded 63 % Not responded 36 % 19 11 Followed n:13 Not Followed n:6 Improvement status YES NO 8(61%) 5(38%) 0(0%) 6(100%)

Conclusion: The Mahboob Power Evaluation and Therapeutic Chart(MPET) Chart is an effective tool in Post Polio Paralysis Management.
