Our planet – our world Basic Skills

Where does our water come from? We live in a very hot country with very little rainfall and very few rivers so….. Where does our water come from?

Just 1.2% of Dubai’s water comes from natural ground sources. So, where does the rest come from?

Desalination plants convert seawater into 98 Desalination plants convert seawater into 98.8 percent of Dubai’s water supply. 98% !

What is desalination? Desalination (desal) is the process of removing dissolved salts and minerals from seawater or brackish water. It is also called desalting or by its shortened name, desal.

Huge pipes draw in up to a billion gallons of water from the adjoining Arabian Gulf every day. The pipes that feed some of the Jebel Ali water stations stretch one kilometre out to sea, but those serving the newest station are just offshore. Seawater is then passed through a series of filters to take out any bad bits hat make it unsuitable to drink.

The liquid produced by the desalination units lacks the essential minerals required in drinking water and these are added at the end of the process. Now it’s ready to drink!

How could you save water at home? How could you save water at school? Can you imagine any other ways of creating more drinking water?
