Unit 1: Physical Science NCHS

 If you have finished your diagnostic – answer the following questions on a loose leaf sheet of paper under your UNIT 1 TAB – this should be your first paper in UNIT 1.  REMEMBER to write the class header on EVERY SINGLE PAPER you use in this class!  Questions – 1.Name your top 5 personal goals for this year. 2.What are our class goals? 3.For each goal – name 3 things you can do to ensure you/we reach them. 4.What are the daily expectations in an effective learning environment?

OBJECTIVE  SWBAT: Evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, skepticism, and openness.

Using 12-inch voices… Turn to your partner and discuss how this activity is similar to “doing” science. End

How is this activity similar to “doing” science 1) Assume that the pieces fit together – idea of nature being a puzzle that we have not yet solved 2) Trial and error is an essential ingredient to science 3) New information may require the old theory to be modified or discarded 4) Our current information may be incomplete and therefore, our theories incorrect 5) Sometimes, we get lucky and find the right answer 6) Collaboration may be helpful 7) Once we arrive at the answer, it makes perfect, elegant sense.

What is science? At the end of the day, science is not just a subject in school. It is a method for studying the natural world. Science is a process that uses observation to gain knowledge.

Physical Science The branch of science that deals with matter and energy This course is a combination of physics and chemistry.

The Scientific Method This is the general pattern of an organized investigation. 1.State the problem 2.Gather information 3.Form a hypothesis 4.Test the hypothesis 5.Analyze data 6.Draw conclusions 7.Hypothesis is either supported or non supported 8.Supported = test several more times to make sure its correct 9.Not supported = modify hypothesis and try something else

Lab Write-up Notes (Write this down!)

Hypothesis  A possible explanation or prediction for a problem using what you know and what you’ve observed.  An experiment tests the effect of one thing on another using controlled conditions

Variables A quantity that can have more than a single value

Materials  Type a detailed list of the items you needed to complete your experiments.  Be specific about the amounts used.

Procedure  List all of the steps used in completing your experiment.  Remember to number your steps.  Add photos of your experiments.

Collect Data/Observations  It is easier to understand the data if it is put into a table or graph. Create a graph in Microsoft Excel and import it here.  Make sure all data is clearly labeled.

Draw Conclusions Type a brief summary here of what you discovered based on the results of your experiments. You need to indicate whether or not the data supports the hypothesis and explain why or why not.

Works Cited Be sure to include print and electronic sources and put them in alphabetical order.

EXCELLENCE is the HABIT  “One of the shortcomings of our education system is that students stop asking the important questions such as: ’Why, Why Not, and How’ - rather these questions get replaced with mundane one such as: “What, When, and Where.”  Curiosity and creativity are essential ingredients in scientific progress.  Do not be afraid to try, to succeed or fail, and to question.  If you ONLY ask questions that I can answer completely, you are not doing their job as students!

Lab Safety Begins Before You Go to the Lab!  Always read through the lab instructions before you go to the lab.  Ask any questions you may have concerning the lab BEFORE you begin.

Proper Lab Behavior  Never indulge in horseplay or behavior that could lead to injury of others.

Dressing for Lab  Use goggles, gloves, and lab aprons when instructed to do so.  Due to the dangers of broken glass and corrosive liquid spills in the lab, open sandals or bare feet are not permitted in the lab.

Safe Lab Practices  Learn the location and usage of the eyewash fountain, fire extinguisher, safety shower, office intercom button, evacuation routes, clean-up brush and dust pan, glass/chemical disposal can.

Safe Lab Practices (cont.) Never look directly into a test tube. View the contents from the side. Point test tubes that are being heated away from you and others. Never taste any material in the lab. Food, drink and gum are prohibited in lab.

Safe Lab Practices (cont.)  Never smell a material in a test tube or flask directly.  Instead, with your hand, "fan" some of the fumes to your nose carefully when instructed.

In the Event of a Lab Accident……  Report all accidents regardless of how minor to your teacher.  For minor skin burns, immediately plunge the burned area into cold water and notify the teacher.

In the Event of a Lab Accident…… (cont.)  If you get any chemical in your eye, immediately wash the eye with the eye-wash fountain and notify the teacher.  Immediately notify the teacher of any chemical spill and clean up the spill as directed.

At the End of Your Lab Time…  Return all lab materials and equipment to their proper places after use.  Dispose of all chemicals AS DIRECTED BY YOUR TEACHER!  Wash and dry all equipment, your lab bench and your clean-up area.
