General Information:  Born: February 2, 1902 San Francisco, California  Died: April 22, 1984 Monterey, California  Education: Yale University and Harvard University

Images: “You don't take a photograph, you make it.” -- Ansel Adams

Inspired:  “On vacation with his family in the Yosemite Valley in 1916, he took snapshots of the majestic beauty of the land and found the inspiration that later led him to profoundly impact the world of photography as art.”

Explanation of invention:  The Zone system (invented by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer) was made to be a simple method by which light exposure could be controlled.  Before this invention the photographic industry had standardized f-stops and shutter speeds which were an alternative form of controlling light.  “Adams and Archer took the spectrum of print values, from black to white, and, using f-stops as the standard of measurement, simply assigned a Zone to each value that each f-stop of exposure produced. This results in a Zone Scale, which is a visual representation of PRINT values from black to white. Zones are always represented in Roman Numerals.”

Invention:

Exposure Time to the Zone System:  The exposure time is the same for all elements, but the image illuminance varies with the luminance of each subject element.

Photographs with the invention:
