Overview Smarter Lunchroom Movement (SLM) Evidenced-based, simple low- and no-cost changes with an emphasis on lunchroom environments and behavioral economics Dr. Brian Wansink at the Cornell University Food & Brand Lab started SLM in 2009 Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs (the B.E.N. Center) Funded and supported by USDA Addresses National School Lunch Program (NSLP) guidelines Team Nutrition SLM strategies now incorporated into criteria for HealthierUS School Challenge

Best Practices Fruit Display fruit on all lunch lines in 2 locations (1 near the register) Display whole fruit in a bowl or basket instead of a stainless steel bin or tray Vegetables Give vegetables creative/descriptive names and display names next to or with vegetables on the line Display the targeted creative/descriptive names on posters or menu boards outside the cafeteria
