Using the Right Word Rule: When you mean it is or it has, use an apostrophe. When you are using its as a possessive, don’t use the apostrophe. A possessive indicates possession or ownsership. Example: It’s your right to refuse the invitation. (it is) The furniture store celebrated its tenth anniversary.
