1 AIOTI Phase 2:Some ideas Stephen Pattison ARM

What is AIOTI for?  Part of the problem is that different groups want different things from AIOTI. Some of the objectives are :  Encouraging a European IoT Ecosystem and stimulate innovation  ‘Match making’ - bringing together companies (and others) to explore common interests  Designing the framework for the Large Scale Pilots  Providing (for SMEs) a way of exploring European Funding  Promoting convergence on IoT technical Standards  Examining policy issues which might delay the take up of IoT

The Challenge  Is to devise an arrangements for AIOTI Phase 2 which satisfies all these demands.  Otherwise interest will disappear.

The Prospects are Good  Companies want AIOTI to continue  Some policy, standards and innovation issues remain unresolved  Although there will be less work on designing Large Scale Pilots, AIOTI could play a continued role monitoring how they how they address the challenges identified in Phase One  Once the LSPs are agreed, there may be fewer opportunities outside for SMEs to access direct funding. But they will stay if there is a chance of contacts/business  The policy, standards and innovation issues remain unsolved

A New Structure might help  Proposal:  Five Work Streams (working groups):  (i) Policy and Business Models  (ii) Innovation  (iii) Standards  (iv) LSPs  (v) Stakeholder outreach

Work Stream on Policy and Business Models:  Will look at the issues identified in the policy Group phase one, including  Data Protection/Privacy  Data Security  Interoperability  Business Models  An IoT Narrative addressing concerns eg around jobs  The core group for this stream would be the Phase One Policy Working Group

Work Stream on Innovation  Will look at :  As in current group, advice to inform future Horizon programmes  Promoting New technologies  The core group for this stream would be the IERC/Phase one Innovation Group.

Work Stream on Standards  As proposed in Phase One, this will continue to look at promoting standards convergence  The core group for this stream would be the Phase One Working Group 3 on Standards

Work Stream on LSPs  This will focus on:  Drawing up KPIs for the LSP  Monitoring progress of LSPs  Including monitoring SME engagement and making recommendation where necessary  Coherence across LSPs  It could have subgroups drawn from the Phase One Working groups.

Work Stream on Stakeholder Outreach  This will focus on:  Identifying a wider range of stakeholders, outside traditional tech businesses/universities etc  To include (i) user groups, in eg health sector, (ii) infrastructure providers for eg connected cars,(iii) transport companies for eg smart cities (iv) insurance companies for data/safety based business strategies  Bringing those groups together with tech companies etc to explore ways of working together to deliver IoT successfully  A new Core Group would be required for this Stream, maybe composed of representatives of Phase One Working Groups.

All Streams  Will not work in silos  Will actively develop connections with other groups ( particularly important for the stakeholder group)

Deliverables  Each Stream’s Terms of Reference ( very short) would be set by the AIOTI Board  Each Stream would draw up its own milestones for 2016 and beyond  Each Stream would report back to the AIOTI Board

Thoughts on Formalisation  AIOTI Phase one has demonstrated that groups will organise themselves to deliver  So maybe we don’t need a Secretariat?  If not why have a financial subscription?  If one is needed, it should be minimal.
