1 Proposal to Increase Committee Terms to Three Years Policy Oversight Committee (POC) Fall 2015

2 What problem will the proposal solve?  With two-year terms, each year roughly half of the committee is comprised of new members  Time and resources to orient new members and get them “up to speed”  Committee may lose important expertise and historical knowledge before large projects are complete

 To help the OPTN/UNOS run more efficiently  Retain needed expertise and historical knowledge to see complex projects through to completion  Maximize the return on investment in time and resources it takes to orient new committee members What is the goal of the proposal? 3

Term Lengths with This Proposal 4 Two Year TermsAll Membership and Professional Standards Committee (MPSC) members Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory, Ad Hoc International Relations, Data Advisory, Histocompatibility, Living Donor, Kidney, Liver, Minority Affairs, Operations and Safety, OPO, Pancreas, Pediatric, Thoracic, Transplant Coordinators and VCA Committees Three Year TermsAll members of Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory, Ad Hoc International Relations, Data Advisory, Ethics, Histocompatibility, Kidney, Liver, Living Donor, Minority Affairs, Operations and Safety, OPO, Pancreas, Patient Affairs, Pediatric, Thoracic, Transplant Administrators, Transplant Coordinators, and VCA Committees Chairs and Vice Chairs of Patient Affairs, Ethics, and Transplant Administrators Committees.

 There is nothing members need to do to implement this proposal.  Current plan is to only apply the new 3-year terms to new members coming onto a committee after this proposal is passed.  Once approved, staff will determine date for implementation of new term lengths based on:  Time needed to effectively communicate to potential and new members that there is now a 3-year commitment  Current committee term end dates and appointment process for new committee members How will members implement this proposal? 5

 Goal 5: Promote the efficient management of the OPTN  Enables the OPTN run more efficiently since committee members will be able to serve longer on a committee and see important projects through to completion  Helps committees to retain important historical knowledge and to spend less time orienting new members How does this proposal support the OPTN Strategic Plan? 6
