The cell
All living things are made up of small, individual units called cells Some organisms consist of one cell=unicellular others made up of many cells=multicellular Life processes are carried on by cells
Two Basic cell types: Prokaryotic: lack membrane bound structures (nucleus) bacteria Eukaryotic: present in all living things except bacteria; filled with organelles, (membrane bound structures). NUCLEUS –most important
Prokaryotic cell
Eukaryotic cell
Cell Size: Small because of the need to get things in and out of the cell in a timely manner Limited by surface area to volume ratio
Cell organelles Nucleus Mitochondria Golgi body Lysosome Vesicle Ribosome Endoplasmic reticulum
Nucleus
“brain” Control center Controls metabolism + reproduction Contains chromosomes
nucleus
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse” Site of cellular respiration
Mitochondria
Golgi body
Packaging, processing center modifies & transports proteins
Golgi body
Lysosome
Sac-like structure Contains strong digestive enzymes “digestion center” lysol
lysosome
vesicle
Fluid filled sacs Store food, water, waste
Ribosome
Small particles of RNA Help make proteins
ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Pathway for transport of material Large surface area site of protein synthesis
Endoplasmic reticulum-smooth
Endoplasmic reticulum-rough
