Brazilian Blowout Lauren Kirk October 20, 2015 ALEC 640 Innovation Project

What is it?  A smoothing system that tackles unruly hair and makes it smooth and straight.  Uses breakthrough bonding technologies to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle.

The Oasis Spalon, owned by Bonnie Barham, began using Brazilian Blowouts in They have completed more than fifty treatments in the last year. Unknowingly, they used the innovation development process to implement this new product into their work place.

Needs/Problem  In the past, Bonnie and Carla used Pravana straighteners on their clients.  This technique took a long time and damaged the hair cuticle.  The cost of the treatment and the amount of people using it did not make enough revenue for the salon.  They needed something better.

Research  Bonnie went to different hair shows and watched how the product was applied.  She talked to other stylists to see what their opinions were of the Brazilian Blowout.  She tested many types of blowouts on her own hair.

Development  Bonnie had a few clients with unruly hair that had previously used the Pravana straightener.  Bonnie used the Brazilian Blowout on three clients and showed the other stylists the results.  She performed this on her clients in hopes of providing an image of what the blowout was capable of.

Commercialization  Bonnie put up several pictures of before and after blowout sessions.  She also included products with each session.  Bonnie hung numerous signs around the salon promoting Brazilian Blowouts, as well as putting things on the salon’s Facebook page.

Commercialization

Diffusion & Adoption  Once the other stylists saw the benefits, they began to adopt the Brazilian Blowout.  The stylists went to several workshops, and the salon became the only certified salon in the city.

Consequences  The salon has seen more revenue from the blowout because it is exclusive.  Clients have been happier with the treatments and have been return users.  Product revenue has increased because clients are continuing to buy the products after the treatments.  Were voted “Best of Nac” for beauty salon this year.
