Bird Flu Pre-Assessment Qs 1. Write down everything you know or have heard about the “Bird Flu” 2. Draw a picture of what you think the “Bird Flu” virus looks like 3. Describe what you think happens to your body if you contract the “Bird Flu virus” 4. Where do you think the Bird Flu virus exists and where did you believe it originated from?

Title: Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Today’s Date: Thursday April 25th

Background Info… Bird Flu is caused by a virus carried naturally among birds Very contagious among birds (can result in death) Virus is spread through saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Virus can have 2 forms in birds Low pathogenic form (mild symptoms - ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production) Highly pathogenic form (may cause disease that affects multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate that can reach % w/in 48 hrs)

Symptoms of Bird-Flu in Humans: Fever, cough, sore throat, & muscle aches Eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases Life-threatening complications. Avian Flu H5N1 has caused the largest number of detected cases of severe disease and death in humans AVIAN Flu H5N1

Human Cases of H5N1 outbreaks have occurred in Asia and parts of Europe, the Near East and Africa More than half of those people reported infected with the virus have died (Mortality rate is 60%) Resulted from direct or close contact with H5N1-infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. H5N1 remains a very rare disease in people. Effects on Humans

Why is this of concern? Flu viruses can rapidly mutate causing the virus to spread from human to human Humans have little or no immune protection against the bird flu. This could cause an influenza pandemic (worldwide outbreak of disease) Experts from around the world are watching the H5N1 situation in Asia and Europe preparing for the possibility of a pandemic

Bird Flu Notes Summary Please write a 1 paragraph summary capturing the main concepts covered in today’s lecture. What are the “take-away” points that you gathered about the bird flu virus

Bird Flu Video Notes At the end of the video, you will be turning in one page of notes on Avian Flu **Keep in mind the BIGGER PICTURE, not minute facts
