  From your previous studies, write down everything you know and everything you think you know, about the original 13 British colonies. Also, write down any questions that you still have on the topic. DO NOW:

  The colonies created governments that helped develop the Democracy that we know today.  These ideals include representative government and limited government.  The idea of democracy was very much a work in progress, and has come a long way since colonial America.  You will be able to list examples of the rights that colonists valued and connect their values to your current values. You will learn how:

  New England colonies  Middle colonies  Southern colonies  You will learn the following about each colony and colonial region:  Leaders, Reasons founded, Significance/Influence on America, Government/ Steps toward democracy  Economy/Trade, Climate/ Geography  Importance of Religion You will also be able to explain what life was like in the different colonial regions:

  The colonies were settled by the British, making the colonists subjects of the British crown.  Each colony was very different, but they shared qualities that helped shape our government today. The 13 colonies

  Each colony had a legislature- a group of people who have the power to make laws.  Within the colonies, people had the right to vote for these representatives within the legislature.  Unfortunately, the right to vote was given to white Christians, and in some colonies, they also had to be landowners. This excluded many individuals living in the colonies. The 13 colonies
