The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Objectives “[To create a] Collective research library presence on the Web.” Jerry D. Campbell, “The Case for Creating a Scholars Portal to the Web: A White Paper” To develop a suite of discovery tools and services for academic users of the Internet. May 2001 E-news for ARL Directors

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Objectives “..... construction of a suite of Web-based services that will connect the higher education community as directly as possible with quality information resources that contribute to the teaching and learning process and that advance research. Working Group Report,

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Objectives a suite of scholarly productivity tools and services to “integrate, manipulate, exploit, and explore” the academic content universe.

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Principles Access to disparate electronic resources and services can be improved through integration, both within a single institution and between multiple institutions. Efforts to effect such integration should leverage work already being carried out in ARL libraries.

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Collaboration Why ARL? “The magnitude of the need and the significance of the opportunity.” Jerry D. Campbell, “The Case for Creating a Scholars Portal to the Web: A White Paper” ARL and... commercial and not-for-profit sectors libraries academic colleagues

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Collaboration “... those responsible for this new environment include but also go beyond the library community. It implies the active involvement of faculty and scholars institutions need to... embrace the fact that partnerships between and among for-profit and traditional institutions may be some of the most successful models for creating and delivering these new learning environments.” Brian L. Hawkins, “Information Access in the Digital Era.” Educause Review 36/5 (Sept./Oct. 2001)

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: “Super Discovery Tool” Local catalog Other research library catalogs “Vetted” Web sites Locally licensed full-text and abstracting/indexing databases Public domain or publicly accessible abstracting/indexing services Finding aids for special collections and archives Locally digitized resources

The New Academic Platform  ARL Scholars Portal: “Super Discovery Tool”  Ability to query two distinct streams of electronic resources and databases: “Universal stream” of unrestricted resources (Web pages and searchable databases) from Web sites targeted for quality and academic relevance. “Local stream” of information, access to which is restricted to local users by license or other agreement. Ability to map a search against different types of metadata.

The New Academic Platform ARL Scholars Portal: Audience? Initially, teaching faculty and students, especially undergraduates. Subsequently, academics with more advanced needs.
