Lesson Objectives ICEBERG QUESTIONS To revise section B exam technique for 12 mark questions ICEBERG QUESTIONS

How does Section B work? This is the specialist knowledge section of the paper and can be on any topic in the American West You will have a choice between two questions – question 2 or question 3 (these will be on different topics) Each question has 3 parts, eg. 2a, 2b and 2c – you much answer all parts of ONE question a = 4 marks, b = 8 marks, c = 12 marks Time per question = number of marks + 5mins

Level 1: Answer that provides general statements, describe single factors or basic facts about why the Indians didn’t like whites 1-2 marks Level 2: Answer that describes several factors to do with the topic briefly. Doesn’t explain how important the factors are OR Answer that identifies and explains one factor, in depth, to do with the topic. Doesn’t explain how important the factor is 3-6 marks Level 3: Answer that recognises and explain several factors to do with the topic in specific detail. Answers at this level may begin to evaluate the importance of factor(s) 7-10 marks Level 4: Answer that is the same as level 3 but also clearly evaluates the relative importance of individual factors and has a clear conclusion saying the most important reason. Answer may also show links between factors 11-12 marks

Top Tips 12 Marks = 17 minutes This is an ICEBERG question. You need to talk about the factor or issue they give you in the question and at least 3 other reason that help explain why the event happened 4 paragraphs Conclusion

How important was the US Army in the defeat of the Plains Indians? 2007 How important were the railways in the development of Cattle ranching on the Great Plains? How important was the leadership of Brigham Young in both leading the Mormons to the Great Salt Lake and then settling there? 2008 How important was the US Army in the defeat of the Plains Indians? How important was cattle rustling as a cause of lawlessness and violence in the West? 2009 How important was the winter of 1886 – 1887, amongst other factors, in the development of the Cattle Industry on the Great Plains? How important was a belief in the idea of ‘Manifest Destiny’, amongst other factors, in encouraging white people to settle on the Great Plains? 2010 How important was the destruction of the buffalo, amongst other factors, in ending the traditional way of life of the Plains Indians? How important were the actions of the United States government, amongst other factors, in the setting up of a permanent Mormon home around the Great Salt Lake?
