How do we know what we know about the past?

Hunt for evidence that is buried in the ground where human settlements may have once been.

Weapons, tools, containers, debris, food remains, and other things made by humans Artifacts tell us lots of information about a population of people

 Stories that are passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation

 Anthropologists:focus on human society. They study how humans developed and how they relate to one another  Historians:People who study and write about the past  Rely on written records

 Primary source:is a document or physical object that was written or created during the time of study  Example: The artifacts or artifakes  Secondary source:interpret or analyze primary sources  Example: The table your group created that analyzed the artifacts or artifakes
