Measurements, Tools, Units you use and SI Units

Measurement Tool Used What you measure in SI Unit Mass Triple beam balance g kg Length Ruler, meter stick cm m Volume of liquids Graduated cylinder mL L Volume of regular solids Ruler cm3 Weight Spring scale N

To measure the volume of an irregular solid, use: 1. A graduated cylinder if the object fits into the graduated cylinder. Fill the graduated cylinder to the 50 mL mark, drop in the object, read the new volume. Subtract the original volume from the new volume. Remember that 1 mL = 1 cm³ OR 2. A displacement tank, beaker and graduated cylinder if the object is too large to fit into a graduated cylinder. Fill the displacement tank until it overflows (next to a sink). When the water stops dripping place the item to measure into the tank. Place a beaker under the spout and collect the water that is displaced. Measure the volume using a graduated cylinder. Remember that 1 ml = 1 cm³
