Two study visits to Milan were originally planned for the 1 st year of the Project: -from 12 to 16 of March, 2007, to study the Milan experience in the application of Ground Water Flow Model (GWFM) under Task 4, -from 21 to 27 of May, to study experiences in using geological information, and, in particular, experiences in geological licensing and control (Task 2). According to the the 1 st SC decision both study visits were organized simultaneously from 4 to 8 June, 2007 Life – Third Countries GeoInforM

Opening of the Programme: - Participation of the Russian delegation in the special meeting at the Government of the Province of Milan, dedicated to the International Environment Day. - the Russian experts met the high-level environmental officials of the Provincial Government; - the importance of cooperation in the framework of GeoInforM was emphasized. A local project, titled Metrobosco, was presented, which has a clear connection with GeoInforM ideas (use of managerial tools, ground water model, decisions-support tools, etc). - the meetings included official presentations of the Central Directorate Environmental Resources of the Province of Milan, of the Committee for Nature use, St. Petersburg City Administration, and of the Europe Office and international relations of the Province of Milan. The experts of the Ground Water Department of the Province of Milan provided a detailed familiarization of Russian experts with the following issues: 1. Legal aspects of water resources use and management in the Province of Milan: A detailed presentation was made, covering European and Italian legislation related to the water use. Relevant Russian legal framework was discussed. Life – Third Countries GeoInforM

2. Procedures to obtain authorizations for the use of ground water: A detailed discussion of the procedure of application for a license to use ground water resources; consideration o applications; issuing licenses by the Province of Milan; monitoring of compliance of water users with the license provisions. 3. Activities of the Ground Water Department in the field of environmental education. Experiences of the cooperation with schools, universities and NGOs in the field of environmental education educational institutions were discussed. Samples of publications issued by the Province of Milan for educational purposes were given to the Russian experts. Life – Third Countries GeoInforM
