What is Erosion? Erosion is the process by which weathered material is removed and carried from one place to another.

What is Deposition? Deposition is the process by which material carried by erosion is dropped in new places.

How does running water cause erosion? Rivers, streams and runoffs are examples of running water. Runoff is water from rain or snow that flows on Earth’s surface.

What landforms does running water create? A delta is a triangular deposit of sediment located at the mouth of a river. A river creates a delta by laying down sediment or rock debris such as gravel, sand, silt, and clay that it has picked up and carried along its course.

How do waves cause erosion? Ocean waves cause erosion by causing rock pieces to grind against another. This grinding force is called abrasion. It wears down rock particles until they become sand. The sand is then carried away by the waves.

How do glaciers cause erosion? Frozen into a glacier are large rocks and sediments. As a glacier moves, these materials are carried to new places. Loose material deposited by a glacier is called till.

How does wind cause erosion? Wind has energy. Wind can move loose materials such as sand and dust particles. The removal of loose material from the Earth’s surface caused by wind is called deflation.

How does gravity cause erosion? The downward pull of gravity can cause materials to move from areas of high elevation to areas of low elevation. Gravity forcers glaciers to move downward and rivers to flow towards the ocean. Mass erosion is the downward movement of materials.
