Workers rights and responsibilities As an employee you have the right: To request an OHSA inspection of the company for workplace hazards. File a complaint with the OHSA if you believe you have been wrongly discriminated, demoted or fired from the organization. You may refuse to work in a dangerous work situations. As an employee you have the responsibility: Comply with all the OHSA standards Cooperate fully with the OHSA officer who inspects your workplace. Report to your officer if you have any work related injury or illness.

Role of Employment contracts and Agreements An employment contract is an agreement between an employer and employee that sets out terms and conditions of employment. A contract can be in writing or verbal. All employees are covered by the NES, regardless of whether they’ve signed a contract. A contract can’t make employees worse off than their minimum legal entitlements

Role of Certification and Licensure A professional credential shows employers that you: understand the retail industry; have skills you need to succeed in retail store positions; are committed to continued learning and professional development

NRF The NRF or National Retail Federation is the world’s largest retail trade association, representing retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries. In the spring all students in this class will take a customer service certification test, if you pass you will be certified to be a customer service rep and will look really good on your applications and resumes. The certification test normally would cost a student $50 but the county of Loudoun picks up the cost. So you can take this certification and use it at any organizations and make you stand out from the crowd.

Role of labor organizations Labor Organizations bargain with employers on behalf of workers in certain industries. The primary role of labor unions is to fight for better rights, wages and benefits for workers. Unionized workers typically have substantially higher pay and better benefits than workers in the same industry who are not members of a union

Process/ skill question An employee handbook that states all the workers rights, expectations and rules so the employer and employee understand and implement them. Compromise between labor and employers is important so that both labor and employers are happy and can prevent strikes or employees quieting due to the companies unfair policies.
