Sam Jones Interpretation A Visual Media: Cold Hot &

HOT v. COLD Hotter medias are high in resolution and in information, therefore require less audience participation. Cold medias require a high amount of audience participation due to their low definition. Hot media: require little thought process (bubble gum for the brain.) Cold media: requires us to use our imaginations to fill in missing information. An example of cold media.

Hot Printed word: Provides detailed information Generally visual Emphasizes one sense Linear and logical Favors analytical precision Bright and intense Radio: Stimulates a single sense and a communal activity. Photography: Captures everything visible to the naked eye, full of color and detail. What you see is what you get.

Hot Movies are loud and explosive, many people can come together and pay for the movie going experience. It is a social activity and leaves little to interpretation.

HOT : PRINTED WORD Linear Direct In depths information Sequential ordering High participation

Cold Private Soft Fleeting Ambiguous Independent Subtle Blurry

Television: Low definition Demands attention for accurate interpretation Both social and individual activity Can be used to promote information Affects multiple senses The more mainstream television becomes the hotter it becomes i.e. commercials (loud, flashing, bright)

High participation Only appeals to the sense of hearing. Social, but only in small groups. Used to transmit information Cold: Telephone

HOT&COLD HOT Usually engages in a single sense Presents complete information and requires little interpretation from audiences. Higher quality Analytical precision emphasized COLD Provides less data, therefore requires more engagement. Attracts multiple senses Lower quality “fuzzy” Ambiguous and subtle
