CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status FY09 Tactical Plan Status Report for Neutrino Program (MINOS, MINERvA, General) Margaret Votava April 21, 2009 Tactical plan names listed here…DocDB# MINOS2933 Minerva3024 Need to write one for General

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status2 Resolution of Past Action Items: MINOS [1/3] Working with CD Scientific Facilities and Scientific Core Services –Transition primary warehouse MySQL database to Database Admin Group: Done, –Migrate MINOS CVS repository to cdcvs: Done, –User access to Grid resources for user analysis: Done, now supported by collaboration –Purchase and deploy new hardware Servers: not ordered dCache: plan canceled, funding used for BlueArc disk BlueArc: order currently in purchasing

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status3 Resolution of Past Action Items: MINOS [2/3] Working with MINOS experiment collaborators –Monitor data handling operations at all stages: Ongoing –Provide standard build of releases and external packages: Ongoing –Provide support for the computing and disk facilities, data handling, storage and SAM data catalogue: Ongoing –Provide user access to Grid resources for user analyses: Done, now supported by collaboration –Maintain control room computers, DocDB, CRL instances: Ongoing –Expand the use of parrot as a mechanism for using previously mentioned builds on the extended GPFarm: Done –Explore the implications of large scale user use of the Grid: Ongoing

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status4 Resolution of Past Action Items: MINOS [3/3] Working with MINOS experiment collaborators –Provide user consultation with MINOS collaborators on: All Ongoing data handling computing systems offline framework simulations –Software support of institutional software components: Ongoing –Migrate remaining F77 based simulation code to C++ framework and integrate replacement external neutrino interaction code (GENIE): 50% completed

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status5 Resolution of Past Action Items: MINERvA [1/2] Plan, Purchase, commission secure head node server: order out Plan, purchase, commission 40 core (including head node) analysis cluster: order out Plan, purchase, commission 15 TB BlueArc disk storage: Funding allocated, waiting for floor space Transition MINERvA MySQL DB to Database Admin Group: In progress, moving existing DB to Oracle and PostgreSQL. Implement SAM service for data taking, storage and delivery: Development in place to start. Production after Dev. fully understood.

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status6 Resolution of Past Action Items: MINERvA [2/2] Offline computing environment –Design and implement data handling operations: not done –Raw data archiving: not done –Support for FNAL software products, ups/upd, sam, etc.: ongoing –Techniques for running analysis on GRID: not done –Support for minerva D0cDB instance: ongoing –Support for minerva CRL instance: ongoing Setup and Support for MINERvA control room: Setup completed, support ongoing. Limited support for DAQ Vista OS and online network security: ongoing User consulting for MINERvA collaborators WRT data handling, computing systems, and offline framework: ongoing.

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status7 Summary of Project Performance (for the period 01-Oct-2008 through xx-xxx-xx) Project Deliverable / Milestone Initial Completion Target % Complete (0,25,50,75,100) Current Completion Target MINOS: Migrate F77 sim code to C++March50July 15 MINOS: Add 50TB BlueArc75June 1 MINERvA: Head and Analysis ClusterMay 1550May 15 MINREvA: 10TB BlueArc (dedicated)50Aug 1 Include bulleted text as appropriate to discuss anomalies and highlight issues or concerns. “% Complete” is a coarse-grained subjective evaluation. Please use one of the following: –0% = not started –25% = started, not much significant progress as yet –50% = significant progress –75% = significant progress and nearly complete, preparing for completion –100% = absolutely complete.

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status8 Project Highlights, Issues, and Concerns Highlights –Computing for Neutrinos Workshop held in March (next slide) –Joint monthly steering committee meeting to begin soon One or two reps for each experiment CD Liason (Lee) and at large CD representative CD and experiment guests to discuss specific topics as needed Issues –MINERvA MoU (CD-docDB #3111) needs to be reviewed by CD and signed –Joint projects have been proposed in the following areas, need manpower: Simulation software Data handling and processing Detector operations, monitoring tools User and operational support Concerns –Major concern about loss of key MINOS software developer. –Experiments currently ramping up have severe shortage of manpower. Drafting a personnel requisition for an Associated Scientist for the neutrino program.

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status9 Computing for Neutrinos March Workshop (DocDB#3175) Shared analysis cluster for all Neutrino groups: –Batch system –Environment setups –Resource partitioning Support for desktop cluster machines Small file (<~1GB) archiving to Enstore tape needs some form of concatenating and/or gzip’ing SAM data file catalog: Sharing backend DB. Features needed by various groups. Sharing database services by all Neutrino groups (calibration, construction, conditions, … ). Common neutrino CVS repository in which shared code And much more…

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status10 Financial Performance: FTE Usage

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status11 Financial Performance: M&S (Internal Funding)

CD FY09 Tactical Plan Status12 Tactical Plan Status Summary Status Summary –The Neutrino program includes projects at all stages –REX/MINOS continues to provide excellent development and support for the ongoing needs and upcoming run extensions. –The MINOS experience is being used as an example to plan and project for experiments coming on line, or in early stages. –MINERvA is making good progress developing, procuring and commissioning its offline computing program. –It is clear that manpower is needed from PPD and/or CD to provide the computing needs for the overall Neutrino program.
