Henry’s Freedom Box Retold by Michiya Austin

Henry Brown was born into slavery in 1815 or 1816 on the Louisa plantation of John Barret, a former mayor of Richmond, Virginia. As a teenager, Brown was sent to live in Richmond where he worked in a tobacco factory, married, and fathered children.

In England, Brown exhibited his panorama, helping foster anti-slavery sentiment in that country. About 1862, he began performing more light-hearted shows, with ventriloquists and singers. Ruggles has found no documentation of Brown's life after

Box containing. Upon arrival in the "City of Brotherly Love", the box containing Brown was received by James Miller Mc.Kim, a member of the Underground Railroad. When Brown was released, history records his first words as "How do you do, gentlemen?" He then sang a chosen Psalm from the Bible he had previously selected for his moment of freedom

Henry "Box" Brown ( ?) was a 19th century Virginia slave who escaped to freedom by arranging to have himself mailed to Philadelphia abolitionists in a wooden crate. For a short time he became a noted abolitionist speaker and later a showman, but later lost the support of the abolitionist community, notably Frederick Douglass, who wished Brown had kept quiet about his escape so that more slaves could have escaped using similar means.slavePhiladelphia abolitionistsFrederick Douglass
