Maui Dolphins! By Taylah Allan

About the Maui Dolphin Maui’s dolphin is the world’s rarest and smallest dolphin. Maui’s dolphin are cousins to Hector’s dolphin. They are different to other dolphins because they have a round dorsal fin, short snout and unique grey, white and black markings.

Where they live. They are only found on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Generally they are found close to shore  in groups or pods of several dolphins.

This means there will be NO MORE Maui Dolphins! The Maui’s dolphin is listed as ‘critically endangered’ which means that it faces extinction in the near future. This means there will be NO MORE Maui Dolphins!

What can we do to help? Conservation is everyone’s responsibility We can achieve more for the protection of this dolphin if everyone takes part and works together. Report sightings Call Department Of Conservation on 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468). If possible, DOC staff will respond immediately.

Help protect our special Dolphins Don’t set nets along the west coast where Maui's dolphins have been seen.  Use very very slow speed for boats when dolphins are around. Don’t swim with Maui's dolphins or throw food near them. Don’t dump rubbish in the sea or leave it on the beach. - Take your rubbish home with you. Don’t put cat litter or other animal waste in toilets, drains or water system. This can spread disease
