Current Legislation: Local, State, National Levels

 Passed to require 100% student proficiency by 2014  Focused on government-run schools  receive funds to administer an annual standardized test to determine if students have been taught well

 Proposed overhaul of the law  All students college or career ready by high school graduation  10 states have requested waivers of original NCLB to set new performance targets

 Part 1  allows undocumented students to apply for scholarships funded by private donors  Part 2  allows undocumented students to apply for state loans and grants

 California is the 3 rd state to pass the bill  The Immigrations Policy Center  estimates 2.1 million undocumented children may be eligible for “legal status” under the Dream Act

 California Law requires that teachers must be notified by March 15 of a possible lay-off  Teachers are laid off by seniority first  A bill that would allow teachers to be laid off for performance did not pass in the State Senate

 Effective 2012  School districts are to provide medical services to students injured while participating in a school athletic activity  The injured athlete must be removed from activity for the remainder of the day if suspected of sustaining a head injury

 2011  5 States received extra funding to turn around their low performing schools on standardized tests

 California received $69 million to disperse to school districts who applied to implement improvement efforts to increase student performance  4 Models to choose from:  Turnaround  Transformation  Restart  School Closure

 47 states have passed anti-bullying legislation  Mandate requiring schools to have anti-bullying policies in place  No funding or financial resources are offered to help with security, safety, or improvements to school climate
