Pharmacogenetics
What is Pharmacogenetics? Pharmacogenetics is the clinical testing of the genetic variations (SNP’s) that give rise to differing responses to drugs. Genetic differences in metabolic pathways can affect an individuals response to drugs in terms of therapeutics effect as well as adverse events.
Drug Metabolism Over 80% of today’s medications are metabolized by the Cytochrome P450 enzymes
Types of Metabolizers Rapid metabolizer Normal metabolizer Intermediate metabolizer Poor metabolizer How is the metabolizing function determined? Based on variations with in the gene called SNP’s (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisim)
How is pharmacogentics changing medicine? The one size fits all approach to prescribing is moving towards a more personalized method. Phamacogentics can help determine drug-drug interactions Testing can improve prescription medication efficacy Knowing how a patient will metabolize a drug can minimize the need to physicians to use the “trial and error” process of prescribing medications
Who should be tested? Anyone being prescribed a new medication Anyone who has experienced and ADR Anyone experiencing lack of efficacy Anyone on multiple medications
Common Conditions Mental health Pain Management Post MI Surgery Acid Reflux Cancer Heart Disease Heart Failure High Blood Pressure Migraines Peptic Ulcers High Cholesterol ADHD
Important Statistics Two-thirds of all patient visits result in a drug prescription Adverse Drug Events annually account for: 2 Million Serious Event 100,000 Deaths (4th leading cause of death in US)1 10% of prescription drugs now have PGx block box warnings2 1 http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DevelopmentApprovalProcess/DevelopmentResources/DrugInteractionsLabeling/ucm114848.htm 2 New England Journal of Medicine, July 22, 2010
What makes us different? Our report is the most comprehensive report on the market and will aid physicians when prescribing by providing…. Metabolism levels Drug to Drug interactions Alerts (perform urine drug tox) Decision options (ex: dosing recommendations and alternative medications.) Physicians will be provided a list of drugs within the same class that the patient metabolizes properly. We provide easy to navigate tools at the point of care to aid the physician in prescribing the right medication using established evidence.
