 A form of inflammatory bowel disease.  A disease of the large intestine and colon.  Is found in less than.1% of the American Population.  Similar to Crohn’s Disease.

 The cause of ulcerative colitis is not known.  The most widely accepted theories point to a combination of factors, including: heredity, abnormalities of the immune system, infection or environmental triggers.

 Bacterial Infection  Parasitic Infection  Persistent diarrhea containing blood or pus.  Abdominal pain  Viral Infection  Ulcers

 Reddening and inflammation of the eye  Joint pains  Skin lesions  Sores in the mouth  Fatigue  Weight loss  Loss of appetite

 The goal is to induce remission.  Drugs like Sulfasalazine, Mesalazine and Olsalazine are used.  Can be cured by complete surgical removal of the large bowel or a Colectomy.
