VGT 2 Leader Development Responsibilities Leaders can develop others by providing them with knowledge and feedback using counseling and mentoring. By using both of these principles, a leader can maximize the development of their subordinates and help leave a lasting legacy that acts as a combat multiplier. Why should leaders care about developing their subordinates?

VGT 3 Mentorship The Army defines mentorship as the voluntary developmental relationship that exists between a person of greater experience and a person of lesser experience that is characterized by mutual trust and respect. 3 3 How is mentoring different from counseling? 3 3 How are counseling and mentoring related?

VGT 4 Elements of Mentorship 3 3 Mutual trust and respect 3 3 Can be outside the chain of command 3 3 Non-threatening avenue for personal/professional advice 3 3 Realistic expectations and self-perception 3 3 Today’s ambiguous contingency scenarios require good, positive role models/mentors who are imbedded with the Army Values and the Warrior Ethos. 3 3 Mentorship can help contribute to improving recruiting, readiness and retention. Reference: Army Mentorship Handbook
