Order of Operations What if you have a problem that has more than one operation (For example, addition, multiplication and exponents). Which do you do first? Order of Operations gives us an order of which one to perform 1st, 2nd, 3rd...

Order of Operations: P E M D A S Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Here’s the order: P - parentheses E - exponents M -multiplication D - division A - addition S - subtraction

Here’s the order: P - parentheses E - exponents M -multiplication D - division A - addition S - subtraction Multiplication and Division go together. Simplify them from left to right. Order of Operations: P E M D A S Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

Here’s the order: P - parentheses E - exponents M -multiplication D - division A - addition S - subtraction Addition and Subtraction go together. Simplify them from left to right. Order of Operations: P E M D A S Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8)

P E M D A S

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8) P E M D A S –

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8) P E M D A S – –

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8) P E M D A S – – –

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8) P E M D A S – – –

Ex. Simplify – 9 + (2 + 8) P E M D A S – – –

Example: 27 3 – The fraction bar is a way of grouping. Think of the numerator as having parentheses around it and the denominator with parentheses around it. Then divide... (27 3 – 3 7) (7 + 3) = (81 – 21) 10 = = 6

Example: 4[21 – (4 + 9)] Work from the inside out when there are more than one set of grouping symbols... 4[21 – (13)] = 4[8] = 32
