Essay Structure By Tom Chiles 8BAR © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Introduction In the introduction you are setting the scene for your essay. In general, an introduction should tell the reader what they should expect to accomplish from this essay as well as the main themes. To sum it up, an introduction is usually just an undeveloped conclusion. © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Main body of essay In the main part of the essay every paragraph should have be point evidence explain (PEE). The main part of the essay should say the key points in detail. To get higher marks, try to link paragraphs or subjects together. This should be the longest part of the essay. © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Conclusion In the conclusion you should sum up the main points of the essay but you should not add any more information that has not been mentioned. It is very important that you answer the essay question. To get a higher mark you should give your opinion, backed up with evidence of why you said it. © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Point evidence explain Your paragraphs should be structured in this way. Here is an example of an A* paragraph showing point evidence explain. In contrast to the homepage, the next page, (RUSafe?), warns teenagers of the problems they could face if they illegally downloaded music for example, which would result in their parents being fined by the police. I have separated the text into three main shapes to break up big blocks of writing and instead make it more manageable to read. The text is simplistic; it is ideal for all abilities. However it is definitely not telling young adults what to do, just advising them; as a result, they have a choice of what to do and it is not forced upon them to ‘Be aware of non secure websites.’ © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013
