Warm up Factor completely

Factoring by Grouping SWBAT: Given 4 terms completely factor the given polynomial SWBAT: Factor a trinomial using grouping

To Factor using grouping you must have EXACTLY 4 terms.

Ex. 1: 5x + 15 + xy + 3y (5x + 15) (xy + 3y) 5(x + 3) + y(x + 3) Step 1: Factor GCF Done Step 2: Break the terms into 2 parts – group 1st 2 together and last 2 together (5x + 15) (xy + 3y) 5(x + 3) + y(x + 3) Step 3: factor each part separately Hint: What’s inside the parenthesis should match. Step 4: Write your answer (x + 3)(5 + y) Step 5: Check your answer – multiply it out. 5x + 15 + xy + 3y

Ex 2: 2xy - 4ya + 10x – 20a 2(xy – 2ya + 5x – 10a) Step1: GCF Step 2: 2 groups Step 3: Factor each group Step 4: Write answer Step 5: Check answer 2(xy – 2ya) (+5x – 10a) 2[y(x – 2a) +5(x – 2a)] 2(x – 2a) (y + 5) 2xy – 4ya + 20a – 10x

Ex3: 18x3 + 6x2 +3x+1 St1 – done St2 (18x3 + 6x2) (3x + 1) If they have no common factor you must put 1

Ex 4: 4x2 – 8xy – 3x + 6y Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Hint: if the 3rd term is negative you must factor out a negative. 4x (x – 2y) -3(x – 2y) (x – 2y) (4x – 3) 4x2 – 8xy – 3x + 6y

You try this one. Ex 5: 5x2 – 20x2y + 5a – 20ay Remember to factor out anything that all terms have in common! 5(x2 – 4x2y + a – 4ay) Answer: 5(x2 + a) (1 – 4y)
