Statewide Resource Sharing Update Brenda Bailey-Hainer Colorado State Library April 2006

Building on the Current Foundation Colorado Virtual Library –Available since January 1999 –Connects to 400+ libraries –Supports user requesting –Uses Z39.50 standard

Building on the Current Foundation SWIFT –Available since Sept 2001 –350+ participating libraries –No specific ILS software requirements –Uses ISO ILL and Z39.50 standards

Next Steps New Strategic Plan - Objective 6A A single locator system with access to all Colorado library holdings, and the functionality for patrons to request materials, and the ability for libraries to share standardized catalog records will be developed and implemented (i.e. federated locator system).

Next Steps Resource Sharing Committee being established Demonstration projects set up RFP created and distributed

Demonstration Projects Use NCIP standard Build on foundation of Z39.50 and ISO ILL standards

NCIP NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol Integrates circulation and ILL functions Increases functionality – improves workflow Increases options for user self-service

First Demonstration Project SirsiDynix URSA pilot Selected participants 2-3 month trial

URSA Demonstration Project Participants Denver Public Library - CARL Douglas County Libraries – Horizon East Routt Library District (Steamboat Springs) - III Estes Park Public - TLC Mesa County Public – III Mesa State College – III Pikes Peak Library District – Sirsi Unicorn Salida Regional Library - Horizon Security Public Library - Horizon Weld Library Distinct - Horizon

Demonstration Project - Timeline Profiling information has been gathered from participating libraries Set-up is in progress by SirsiHorizon staff Setting training schedule for staff by end of April

URSA Searching and User requesting

URSA request management

URSA request management – Processing Request

Demonstration Project – Goals Staff efficiency improvement with merging of circulation and ILL activities Request for a lender becomes a hold in the local ILS Receiving a request by a borrower creates the circulation record and hold for the library patron Demonstrate that NCIP works with libraries on different ILS systems – no need for single ILS system

Other Initiatives Exploring requesting across state boundaries –Testing completed with Wyoming –Beginning testing with Kansas Exploring connecting courier across state boundaries
