JOHNSON STREET BRIDGE PROJECT COUNCIL WORKSHOP MAY 21, 2009

AGENDA Purpose – to update Council on federal grant application and provide additional information Bridge Alignment Concept & Cross-section Approach Concepts 3D Rendering of Overall Alignment Cost Estimate Information Schedule Permits / Approvals Process

Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund Application Submitted May 1, 2009 Scope and schedule outlined, to be completed by March 31, 2011 $63 million project cost estimate Bridge crossing concept: – ~25 m width – 3-lanes – Bike lanes, sidewalk, trail, rail – New approach road alignments

BRIDGE ALIGNMENT & APPROACH CONCEPT [as submitted in grant application]

CROSS-SECTION Typical on Deck Cross Section

Approach Concept – West Side

APPROACH CONCEPT – WEST SIDE Benefits Include: Maintains at-grade Esquimalt / Harbour Intersection Includes overpass between E&N and GGRT Trails and improved hotel access Provides cyclist / pedestrian access on both sides of bridge (N+S) at approximate 4-5% grade

APPROACH CONCEPT – EAST SIDE [recent concept] Benefits Include: Will be able to connect Harbour Pathway in front of east abutment Provides improved cyclist and pedestrian facilities Provides potential train station site

Double-Leaf Bascule Concept Benefits – Two smaller / lighter lift spans; less susceptible to wind loads – Reduced mechanical loading on each span – Some potential cost saving Challenges – Power to west side of bridge – Mid-span rail connection

COST ESTIMATE INFORMATION
