E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION What is the ELA Summer Academy? DPS Summer Academy is a four week half-day summer program designed to help students who need extra support developing literacy skills, such as English Learners and students on READ plans.

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION Does my child qualify? Students in grades kindergarten through 8 th if they have an ACCESS level between 1 and 4.

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION Does my child qualify? Students in grades kindergarten through 3 rd grade are invited to attend if they are on a READ plan. Students are placed on a READ plan based on assessment results which indicated that they require additional reading support.

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION What are the benefits? High-quality instruction from excellent teachers Engaging curriculum Documented gains in English and Spanish literacy Student’s learn multiple reading strategies Students become more confident readers

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION How are teachers selected? All selected teachers are highly qualified and have 2 years or more of experience. In addition, we are hiring teachers who have been trained to support students using the Guided Reading Plus method.

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION What school will my student attend? Students are assigned to the Summer Academy site closest to their home address. Students whose home address is more than one mile away from the nearest Summer Academy site are eligible for transportation.

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION How do I apply? You will receive an application from your school if your child meets the criteria for admission. Fill out the application Give it to your school secretary Option 1:

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION How are students tested? The ACCESS test will be administered using paper and pencil this Spring. Next year, Denver expects to shift to an online version of the test

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION Why are English Learners tested?  Classification: Informs student Redesignation decisions  Instruction: Gives teachers information they can use to support instruction and learning for students

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION Why are English Learners tested?  Accountability: Gives the District information that allows them to evaluate their ESL/bilingual program  Parent & Student Engagement: Helps families understand the current level of a student’s English proficiency

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION How do these results affect my student? ACCESS data along with an additional body of evidence is used to determine if a student is ready to be redesignated from the ELA program. Students must score a level 5 or above overall and a level 5 or above on literacy (reading + writing).

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION When are student results received? Mid-May Families receive ACCESS results Fall, 2016 Families receive Growth Report

E NGLISH L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION Describes a student’s progress over time to acquire English language proficiency from her own starting point. – School leaders know what percentage of their ELs is on track/off track to acquire English proficiency over time. – School leaders and teachers can use this data to inform instructional planning and intervention decisions. – Students and families can be engaged goal setting.
