E-Waste Management and Recycling at Fermilab

In 2005, approximately 200,000 pounds of electronic waste was generated at the Lab. All electronics that are excess to the Lab’s mission, get sent to the Property Management department.

The Lab encourages the reuse of assets to meet its mission, including electronics. Approximately 15% of the Lab’s computers are reused internally each year.

All employees are given general EMS awareness training, provided by our ES&H department, that encourages reuse and recycling. ES&H also monitors our waste dumpster program and ensures that no electronics are sent to the landfill.

Electronic Equipment Recycling Pilot Program (E2RP2) was established between Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Fermilab in late Fermilab Transportation Services picks up excess electronics for the DOE Fermi Site office 2 to 3 times per week at ANL Property and Receiving Department.

Win – Win situation for both Fermilab and ANL. ANL does not have sufficient warehouse storage facilities to handle a large number of skids containing excess electronics. There is a significant savings for the disposal of monitors - $0.25 per pound. Fermilab is paid for electronics on a sliding scale, depending on monitor to electronics ratio. This offsets a portion of the Property Management overhead.

Excess assets that are not reused internally to meet the Lab’s mission, are made available to various programs including GSAXcess, E-Bay and Bid4Assests. Electronics that are not reused or made available to internet providers are sent for reclamation or to a de- manufacturing company. FY 2005 Breakdown: 45,000 pounds for reclamation & 160,000 pounds to de-manufacturing.

The de-manufacturing company recycles 100% of the excess electronics. Letters of Destruction can be obtained for each lot of electronics upon request.
