1 DIALOGICAL SELF Cambridge – UK, 2008 General Psychology Departement - University of Padovapresents THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” Claudia Della Torre, Gian Piero Turchi, Valentina Cecchi, Franco Mazzotti

THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - THEORETICAL AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS 1- according to the NARRATIVISTIC PARADIGM, IDENTITY isn’t an “ontological reality”, but it is an “on going” discursive configuration continuously changing, and it is generated by all the “telling voices” acting into a specific context of dialogical interaction NARRATIVISTIC PARADIGM  reality is generated by the discursive processes used in order to define it, that is reality is a discursive configuration of reality

THEORY OF THE DIALOGICAL IDENTITY Common Matrix (Common persons) Auto-attributions (Ultras) Etero-attributions ( Sunday Fans, Common Wills, Professional Soccer Players, Policemen) ID THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - THEORETICAL AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS 2-

STRATEGY : To collect “text” about “Ultras fan” AIM OF THE RESEARCH: Describe how the configuration “Ultras Identity” is generated through “how Ultras talk about themselves” and at the same time “how external voices talk about ultras” TOOLS: Questionnaires Software for textual analysis Discursive repertories DISCURSIVE REPERTORY  limited modality of reality construction that creates or maintains a narrative coherence and that can comprehend different contents THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - METHODOLOGY 1- METHOD FOR TEXTUAL ANALYSIS: M.A.D.I.T. (Methodology of textual Processing Data Analysis, Turchi G.P. et al. 2005)

5 TEXT ANALYSED: Normative Texts (rules for security into the stadium) Speeches provided by Mass media Responses collected by administring the questionnaires GROUP OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH: 106 Ultras (AUTO-ATTRIBUTIONS), 61 Sunday Fans, 60 Common Wills, 50 Professional Soccer Players, 50 Policemen (ETERO-ATTRIBUTIONS) 60 Common Persons (COMMON MATRIX) THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - METHODOLOGY 2 -

6 AUTO-ATTRIBUTIONS Repertory of PREVISION Repertory of POLEMICA Repertory of EXPLANATION Repertory of ROLES CHARACTERITICS Repertory of RATIFYING REALITY Repertory of PRESCRIPTION Repertory of GIUSTIFYCATION Repertory of RATIFYING CONDITIONS Repertory of LEGITIMATION ETERO-ATTRIBUTIONS Repertory of ILLNESS Repertory of POSSIBILITIES Repertory of ROLES CHARACTERITICS Repertory of JUDGEMENT Repertory of RATIFYING REALITY Repertory of PRESCRIPTION Repertory of EXPLANATION THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - RESULTS: DISCURSIVE REPERTORIES -WHICH CONSTRUCT THE AUTO-ATTRIBUTIONS AND THE ETERO-ATTRIBUTIONS-

7 COMMON MATRIX Repertory of RATIFYING CONDITIONS Repertory of EXPLANATION Repertory of ATTRIBUTION OF A PROBLEM Repertory of ROLES CHARACTERITICS Repertory of PRESCRIPTION Repertory of RATIFYING REALITY Repertory of DESCRIPTION Repertory of POLEMIC THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - RESULTS: DISCURSIVE REPERTORIES -WHICH CONSTRUCT THE COMMON MATRIX -

8 The dialogical identity of “Ultras” is generated by a “typing process”  auto-attributions and etero-attributions are going to coincide The discursive context described by the research include the resources (ex. Repertory of description) useful in order to change the present configuration, that is to “break” the typing process The theory used to intervene toward violence into the stadium coincide with the “common sense”  need for models which don’t absume explicative theories about violence and Ultras fans PARADIGMATIC SHIFT The adoption af the dialogical model allow to keep “adherence to the text”, generating new discursive elements (not included before) and emphasizing the resources available into the dialogical context of reference THE DIALOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE “ULTRAS FAN” - CONCLUSIONS -
